In 2010, Graham explained to the New York Times that those rumours are not true: Rumors that the unmarried US senator from South Carolina is homosexual have been circulating on the Internet and repeatedly in the media for years. According to the Human Rights Campaign, Graham also voted against adoption rights and queer anti-discrimination laws. In 2006, he voted against attempts to open the marriage to same-sex couples and stated that he sees marriage solely as a union between a man and a woman that needs to be protected.
